”French Wild Card Loïs Boisson Stuns Mirra Andreeva to Reach Roland Garros Semis”

Loïs Boisson’s Roland Garros fairytale continued on Wednesday as the French wild card, ranked No. 361 in the world, stunned No. 6 seed Mirra Andreeva 7-6(6), 6-3 to advance to the semifinals.

The 22-year-old Boisson had already made headlines earlier in the tournament by delivering the biggest upset of the women’s draw, defeating No. 3 seed Jessica Pegula in the fourth round. She followed that breakthrough with another composed performance under the Court Philippe-Chatrier roof, ousting Andreeva in two hours and eight minutes.

Before this tournament, Boisson had never faced an opponent ranked inside the Top 50—her highest-ranked win previously came against world No. 60 Moyuka Uchijima at a WTA 250 event in Rouen. Her entry into this year’s main draw came via a wild card, a remarkable comeback after missing her planned debut in 2024 due to a torn ACL. She briefly went viral at that event when opponent Harriet Dart made disparaging remarks during their match—a moment Boisson later handled with grace on social media.

Her Roland Garros campaign began with a gritty three-set win over No. 24 seed Elise Mertens, followed by another tough three-setter against fellow wild card Elsa Jacquemot. Boisson then rallied from a set down to take out Pegula and reach the quarterfinals, setting up the biggest match of her young career against Andreeva.

Despite being four years younger, Andreeva entered the match with far more experience. She had reached the semifinals in Paris the year before and started 2025 by winning back-to-back WTA 1000 titles in Dubai and Indian Wells, rising into the Top 10 under coach Conchita Martinez. She hadn’t lost a set through her first four matches and appeared in control when she led 5-3 early in the first set. But Boisson, playing fearless tennis, turned the match around in stunning fashion.

With this win, Boisson tennis becomes one of the tournament’s most compelling stories. Up next, she will face world No. 2 Coco Gauff, the 2022 Roland Garros runner-up and reigning US Open champion, with a Grand Slam final spot on the line.
