Jannik Sinner Advances Smoothly to Wimbledon Second Round

Wimbledon 2025

Dates: June 30 – July 13
Location: All England Club, London

World No. 1 Jannik Sinner made a commanding start to his Wimbledon 2025 campaign, powering past fellow Italian Luca Nardi in straight sets to reach the second round.

Playing his first Grand Slam match since a heartbreaking loss to Carlos Alcaraz in the French Open final, the 23-year-old looked sharp and focused. Sinner took just one hour and 48 minutes to dispatch the 95th-ranked Nardi, 6-4, 6-3, 6-0, under blazing conditions on Court One — the hottest day of the year in the UK.

The three-time Grand Slam champion showed no signs of lingering disappointment from Paris. Instead, he delivered a clinical performance that featured 28 winners and just 17 unforced errors. With this win, Sinner sets up a second-round meeting with Australia’s Aleksandar Vukic.

“New tournament, new chances, new challenges,” Sinner reflected. “You take it one opponent at a time. If you don’t enjoy playing on these courts, I don’t know where you will enjoy it.”

Nardi, just 21 years old, offered some resistance early, saving five break points in the opening set. But Sinner eventually converted his seventh opportunity, swinging the momentum firmly in his favor.

From there, it was one-way traffic. Sinner raced to a 3-0 lead in the second set, and by the third, he was unstoppable—shutting out his opponent completely to seal the match with a bagel.

Despite limited preparation on grass—having suffered a second-round upset to Alexander Bublik at the Halle Open—Sinner looked right at home. After a crushing five-set loss in the French Open final, where he let slip a two-set lead and three championship points, the Italian ace now returns to Wimbledon with renewed focus and the confidence of a true title contender.
