Bryan Kohberger Brutally Disfigured Kaylee Goncalves, Fought Xana Kernodle in Vicious Struggle Before Fleeing Idaho Murder Scene, Reports Reveal
Newly unsealed police documents have revealed harrowing new details about the November 2022 University of Idaho murders, painting a more gruesome picture of the massacre allegedly committed by Bryan Kohberger.
According to the Moscow Police reports, Kaylee Goncalves’ injuries were so severe that her face was left “disfigured” and virtually unrecognizable. Officers responding to the scene described it as a “bloodbath,” with some of the most disturbing violence targeting Goncalves.

On a floor below, a violent confrontation reportedly unfolded between Kohberger and Xana Kernodle. The report describes “an intense struggle,” with Kernodle suffering deep defensive wounds between her fingers—evidence that she fiercely fought for her life after likely witnessing or hearing the murders of her roommates upstairs.
Kohberger fled the house only after his altercation with Kernodle, according to the police. Surviving roommate Dylan Mortensen later told investigators that she saw a masked man exit through a sliding glass door, carrying what resembled a package—possibly a food delivery that arrived just before the killings.
Authorities believe Ethan Chapin, Kernodle’s boyfriend, was asleep at the time of the attack. His body was discovered in bed, partially covered by a blanket, suggesting he may have been the first victim.
Mortensen also recalled chilling details from that night, including screams, heavy footsteps, and a disturbing male voice saying, “You’re gonna be fine. I’m gonna help you,” shortly before Kohberger was seen walking past her room.
Prosecutors now believe Xana Kernodle may not have been an intended target, encountering Kohberger only after he had already begun his killing spree.
On Wednesday, July 23, Bryan Kohberger was sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty to the murders of Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle, Madison Mogen, and Ethan Chapin. During sentencing, Kaylee’s father, Steve Goncalves, called Kohberger “a complete joke” and said the world would forget him.
In a powerful victim impact statement, Kaylee’s sister Alivea Goncalves confronted Kohberger in court, calling him a “sociopath, psychopath, murderer,” and added, “The truth is, you’re basic… Don’t ever try to convince yourself you matter just because someone finally said your name out loud. I see through you.”
The tragic murders shocked the nation and gripped the public for over two years before Kohberger finally admitted guilt as part of a plea deal.
