Michigan Walmart Stabbing Leaves 11 Injured in Apparent Random Attack: What We Know

11 Injured in Random Stabbing at Michigan Walmart — Suspect in Custody

A terrifying scene unfolded Saturday afternoon at a Walmart in Traverse City, Michigan, where a 42-year-old man allegedly carried out a random stabbing spree, leaving 11 people injured, six of them critically.

According to Grand Traverse County Sheriff Michael Shea, the attack occurred around 4:45 p.m. in the store’s checkout area. The suspect, armed with a folding knife, was quickly subdued and taken into custody within minutes by a sheriff’s deputy—with the help of brave bystanders who also assisted in treating victims.

“It appears that these were all random acts. The victims were not predetermined,” said Sheriff Shea.

Videos from the scene captured the chaotic aftermath, with emergency vehicles flooding the parking lot and citizens shouting for the suspect to drop the weapon. Inside, Walmart employees and shoppers ran for safety amid screams and panic.

Victims and Condition

All 11 victims—six men and five women—were taken to Munson Healthcare facilities. As of Saturday night, six were in critical condition, while five remained in serious condition. Three victims underwent surgery. The ages of the injured have not been released.

Community in Shock

Traverse City, a lakeside town of about 16,000 known for its wineries and cherry festival, is now grappling with the horrifying incident. “Violence like this is very uncommon in our area,” Shea added. “But unfortunately, no one is immune.”

Governor Gretchen Whitmer issued a statement expressing sorrow over the “brutal act of violence” and praised the quick response of emergency services.

Federal and State Response

The FBI and Michigan State Police Crime Lab are assisting the sheriff’s office with the ongoing investigation. No motive or additional suspect has been identified so far. The suspect’s name and potential charges have yet to be announced.

Walmart condemned the violence in a statement, calling it “unacceptable” and pledged full cooperation with law enforcement.

Public Figures React

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, a Traverse City resident, said on social media:

“Chasten and I are shaken by the awful and senseless violence… We’re thinking of everyone affected and praying for a speedy recovery.”
