United States Announces Withdrawal from UNESCO Over Policy Differences
The United States has formally notified UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay of its decision to withdraw from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Officials cited concerns that continued involvement in the agency no longer aligns with U.S. national interests.
According to the U.S. statement, UNESCO’s increasing focus on divisive global social and cultural initiatives, along with its alignment with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, runs counter to America’s current foreign policy priorities. The admission of the “State of Palestine” as a full member in 2011 was also highlighted as a significant point of contention, with U.S. officials asserting that the move contradicts longstanding American policy and has fostered anti-Israel sentiment within the organization.
The United States emphasized its intention to prioritize participation in international organizations that clearly support American values and strategic interests.
In accordance with Article II(6) of the UNESCO Constitution, the U.S. withdrawal will officially take effect on December 31, 2026. Until then, the United States will remain a full member and continue to fulfill its responsibilities within the organization.
