Chaos on Set: Netflix Film Spin-Off Hit by Outbreak During Overseas Production

‘Enola Holmes’ Spin-Off Faces Production Halt After Illness Strikes Cast and Crew in Malta

Production on Netflix’s popular Sherlock Holmes spin-off Enola Holmes 3 has reportedly hit an unexpected setback after several cast and crew members were struck with a bout of food poisoning during overseas filming.

After wrapping scenes at Shepperton Studios in the UK, the team had relocated to Malta for the final leg of the shoot. However, things quickly came to a standstill when a number of people on set fell ill — allegedly due to contaminated catering, according to The Sun.

“It’s a nightmare because these productions run to such tight schedules, and filming had to be stopped,” a source told the publication. “There were quite a few affected, and everything had to grind to a halt until they recovered. Fortunately, it wasn’t too serious, and everyone bounced back — but it definitely put pressure on meeting the production deadlines.”

The third installment of the hit franchise sees Millie Bobby Brown returning as Enola Holmes — the witty and fearless younger sister of Sherlock Holmes — alongside Henry Cavill reprising his role as the famed detective. Himesh Patel returns as Dr. Watson, with Louis Partridge once again playing Enola’s love interest, Viscount Tewkesbury.

Also returning to the screen are Helena Bonham Carter as the eccentric matriarch Eudoria Holmes, and Sharon Duncan-Brewster as the enigmatic villain Moriarty.

Filming began earlier this year, and Netflix is eyeing a late 2025 release for the anticipated third film. Plot details are being kept under wraps, though insiders hint this chapter will take on a darker tone compared to previous installments. The story reportedly centers around Enola’s search for her missing mother, while her famous brothers attempt to keep her investigation in check.

Millie Bobby Brown has expressed her excitement for continuing Enola’s journey, telling Deadline:

“I can’t wait to collaborate again with my Enola Holmes family! Enola holds a special place in my heart — she’s strong, fearless, intelligent, and brave. I look forward to fans seeing how her journey continues!”

The actress, known globally for her breakout role in Stranger Things, has previously opened up about the challenge of readjusting to a British accent after spending years portraying an American character.

“I had to learn how to speak again,” Millie told Radio Times. “Even though I’m British, playing an American in Stranger Things for five years made it surprisingly difficult to return to my natural accent.”

Originally developed for theatrical release by Warner Bros., Enola Holmes was acquired by Netflix during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and quickly became one of the platform’s most streamed titles.

Despite the temporary halt, production is expected to resume soon, with fans eagerly awaiting Enola’s next big mystery.
