Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice has been sentenced by a Dallas County judge to five years of probation and 30 days in jail, according to ESPN reporter Adam Schefter. This ruling is connected to Rice’s involvement in a multi-car crash that occurred last April in Dallas.
Shortly after the accident, Rice’s attorney confirmed that Rice was driving the Lamborghini involved in a hit-and-run incident. Following the crash, two people who were injured filed a lawsuit against Rice seeking $1 million in damages.
According to court records, the lawsuit was settled on Wednesday, with Rice agreeing to pay the full $1 million to the two injured plaintiffs, as well as their legal fees.
As part of his sentence, Rice’s 30 days of jail time can be served at any point during his five-year probation period. Additionally, Rice received deferred adjudication, meaning that if he successfully completes probation without further issues, the case will be dismissed.
This legal outcome also opens the door for the NFL to impose disciplinary action on Rice. ESPN’s Schefter reports that Rice is expected to face a multi-game suspension during the upcoming season. However, The Washington Post has noted that a final decision on suspension has not yet been made.
Following the sentencing, Rice’s lawyer, Royce West, shared a statement on his behalf. Rice expressed regret over the accident, saying, “Last March, I was involved in a high-speed accident in Dallas. There have been many sleepless nights thinking about the damages my actions caused. I will continue doing everything I can to make sure everyone impacted is made whole. I urge everyone to obey speed limits, drive safely, and be responsible.”
Rice also apologized directly, saying, “I am profoundly sorry for the physical harm caused to people and property. I fully apologize for the pain I caused to innocent drivers and their families.”
Rice’s 2025 NFL season was cut short due to injury. He was placed on injured reserve in early October and subsequently underwent surgery to repair his LCL, ending his season.
Recently, the 25-year-old wide receiver participated in the Chiefs’ voluntary offseason workouts (OTAs) and has now returned to Kansas City for mandatory minicamp as he prepares for the next season.
