Labor Day 2025: What’s Open, What’s Closed, and Costco’s Hours
Labor Day falls on Monday, Sept. 1, and while many Americans enjoy a well-deserved day off, it’s helpful to know what’s open and what’s not. Most national retailers, grocery stores, and restaurants will be welcoming customers, but banks, post offices, and the stock market will be closed.
A little history: the first Labor Day was celebrated on Tuesday, Sept. 5, 1882, in New York City. By 1894, 23 more states had joined in, and President Grover Cleveland officially signed it into law on June 28, 1894, making the first Monday in September a national holiday. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the holiday honors the “social and economic achievements of American workers.”
