Ground stops are currently in place at major DC-area airports due to severe weather conditions. Dulles Airport will remain on hold until 6:45 p.m., BWI Marshall through 6 p.m., and Reagan National until 6:15 p.m.
This disruption follows a weekend heat wave briefly interrupted by thunderstorms across the D.C. region. Multiple severe thunderstorm warnings were issued throughout Maryland, Virginia, and the District on Sunday.
A flash flood warning for northern Fairfax County, Virginia, was recently canceled, but the region continues to face extreme heat. D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser’s extreme heat alert remains active until Thursday at 8 a.m., although the National Weather Service canceled Sunday’s heat advisory.
Temperatures in the coming days are expected to climb into the 90s, with humidity pushing the heat index to feel like 105 degrees or higher. Overnight lows may remain near 80 degrees or above. To help residents cope, D.C. will open cooling centers throughout the week—find the nearest one online.
7News First Alert Meteorologist Jordan Evans warns of ongoing storms with potential for strong winds and heavy rain. Storm activity is expected to end before midnight, bringing cooler temperatures in the 70s by morning.
Thunderstorms will continue Monday afternoon and evening, with possible severe weather and flooding from heavy rainfall. Temperatures will rise again to the mid-90s, with heat indexes reaching up to 105 degrees.
“We could see heat indexes near 110 degrees by Tuesday and Wednesday,” Evans said. The intense heat wave is expected to last through Wednesday, with highs in the mid-90s and heat indexes near 105. Relief is forecast by the end of the week as cooler, less humid air moves into the region.
