Holiday Hours Alert: What’s Open and Closed on July 4th, 2025

As America Marks 249 Years of Independence, Here’s What’s Open and Closed on July 4, 2025

As Americans celebrate 249 years of independence with fireworks, family gatherings, and barbecues, many services and businesses will observe closures in honor of the national holiday.

The Fourth of July, commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, is a federal holiday. This year, the celebration falls on a Friday — meaning long weekend plans for many and temporary closures for various public and private institutions.

Grocery Stores

Most major grocery chains will remain open with modified or regular hours.

  • Target and Walmart will operate as usual based on local store hours.
  • Kroger-affiliated stores — including Fred Meyer, Dillons, Food 4 Less, Ralphs, and QFC — will also be open, though hours may vary by location.
  • Whole Foods, Wegmans, and Food Lion will maintain standard hours.
  • Trader Joe’s will close early at 5 p.m., and ALDI locations will shut at 4 p.m.
  • Sam’s Club will be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. for Plus members and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. for Club members.
  • Costco locations, however, will be closed for the day.

Before heading out, it’s wise to check with local stores for specific holiday hours.

Retail Stores

Most retail stores will remain open on July 4.

  • TJ Maxx, HomeGoods, and Marshalls will generally close by 8 p.m.
  • Department stores like Nordstrom, JCPenney, and Macy’s will follow regular business hours.
  • Dollar Tree and Dollar General will also be open, but hours may vary.
  • For any last-minute beauty needs, Sephora and Ulta Beauty will remain open.

Pharmacies

  • CVS locations will be open, though pharmacy hours may be reduced.
  • Walgreens stores will operate normally, but most in-store pharmacies — except for 24-hour and select branches — will be closed.
  • Rite Aid will remain open as usual.

Always check individual pharmacy locations for the most accurate hours.

Financial Services

  • The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will be closed.
  • As it’s a Federal Reserve holiday, most bank branches will be shut down, but ATMs and online banking will still be accessible.

Mail and Shipping Services

  • The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) will not deliver or pick up mail.
  • UPS will suspend pickup and delivery services, except for UPS Express Critical for urgent shipments.
  • Most FedEx services will also be unavailable, aside from FedEx Custom Critical, which will remain operational.

Government Offices

  • Nonessential government offices — such as DMVs, public libraries, and local municipal departments — will be closed on Friday in observance of Independence Day.
