Introducing the new Rubeus Hagrid.
Following HBO’s announcement that production has officially begun on its upcoming “Harry Potter” series — along with the reveal of newcomer Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter — the network has now shared the first look at Nick Frost stepping into the role of the beloved half-giant. Known for his roles in “Shaun of the Dead” and “Hot Fuzz,” Frost takes on the iconic character originally brought to life by Robbie Coltrane in the original film franchise.
Filming for Season 1 kicked off Monday at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in the U.K. and is expected to continue through spring 2026. Alongside McLaughlin’s Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton will portray Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout will take on Ron Weasley. These young actors were selected from a pool of over 30,000 hopefuls during last fall’s extensive casting search.
The impressive cast also includes Ralph Fiennes as Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley, Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy, Johnny Flynn as Lucius Malfoy, Leo Earley as Seamus Finnigan, Alessia Leoni as Parvati Patil, Sienna Moosah as Lavender Brown, Bertie Carvel as Cornelius Fudge, Bel Powley as Petunia Dursley, and Daniel Rigby as Vernon Dursley. Additional cast members revealed include Rory Wilmot as Neville Longbottom, Amos Kitson as Dudley Dursley, Louise Brealey as Madam Rolanda Hooch, and Anton Lesser as Garrick Ollivander.
Set to premiere in 2027 on HBO and HBO Max where available, the series is led by showrunner and writer Francesca Gardiner (“His Dark Materials,” “Killing Eve”) alongside director Mark Mylod (“Succession”). Executive producers include Gardiner, Mylod, series author J.K. Rowling, Neil Blair and Ruth Kenley-Letts of Brontë Film and TV, and David Heyman of Heyday Films. The “Harry Potter” series is a collaboration between HBO, Brontë Film and TV, and Warner Bros. Television.
