Following the United States’ recent bombing of three Iranian nuclear sites, the U.S. State Department issued urgent guidance Sunday advising American citizens in Iran to “prepare to shelter in place for extended periods.” Officials made it clear that the U.S. government does not expect to provide direct assistance in evacuating American citizens from Iran.
The newly updated advisory encourages any U.S. citizens still in the country to “take advantage of existing commercial options” to exit Iran as soon as possible. Due to the absence of a U.S. diplomatic presence in Iran, consular services are limited. Switzerland, which typically provides protective power on behalf of the U.S., has also suspended operations at its assistance office until further notice.
“Because of severe restrictions on consular support in Iran, we do not anticipate offering U.S. government-assisted departure,” the advisory stressed.
The guidance also reminds dual U.S.-Iranian nationals that they must leave the country using their Iranian passports and should expect possible questioning at checkpoints from Iranian authorities before being allowed to depart. Iran does not recognize dual nationality and will treat dual citizens as solely Iranian.
According to a Global News Network report released Friday, hundreds of American citizens have already fled Iran in recent days, as conflict intensifies between Tehran and Washington.
Capitol Hill Divided: Democrats Denounce Strikes as “Unconstitutional”

In Washington, debate erupted across the political aisle as several Democratic lawmakers publicly condemned the president’s decision to carry out the airstrikes without congressional approval.
Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA) appeared on State of the Union and sharply criticized the operation, declaring:
“This was not constitutional. It was not lawful in the absence of a declaration by Congress.”
Sen. Jack Reed (D-RI), Chair of the Senate Armed Services Committee, echoed these concerns during an MSNBC interview, warning that the strikes reflect the president’s pattern of bypassing legal checks on military force.
Lawmakers now anticipate votes in both the House and Senate on a new War Powers Resolution, aimed at curbing the president’s authority to deploy military force without congressional oversight.
House Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer added his voice to the chorus on Saturday night:
“No president should be allowed to unilaterally march this nation into something as consequential as war with erratic threats and no strategy.”
Meanwhile, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) went even further, stating that the president’s unilateral actions were “absolutely and clearly grounds for impeachment.” Though Schiff refrained from endorsing that view directly, he emphasized that the War Powers Resolution remains the “better remedy” in this case.
Pompeo Warns of Iran-Linked “Sleeper Cells” in the West
Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo issued a stark warning Sunday on Fox News, citing concerns that Iran could retaliate through sleeper cells in the U.S. and Europe.
Pompeo, who served as CIA Director under Trump, said:
“There is a real concern that Iran might activate sleeper cells to strike back. The risk is real — and we’ve seen them attempt assassination plots in Paris, Brussels, even here in the U.S.”
He referenced a foiled assassination attempt reported by Global News Network in 2022, in which he himself was allegedly targeted by Iranian operatives. Pompeo added that despite the risk, President Trump made the right decision in targeting the nuclear facilities.
“Our law enforcement, especially the FBI, is prepared — but the threats are serious,” he added.
Trump’s Last-Minute Call: VP Vance Reveals Inner Circle Drama
Vice President JD Vance revealed Sunday that President Trump made the final decision to authorize the strikes “minutes before the bombs were dropped.”
Speaking on Meet the Press, Vance described a high-stakes atmosphere in the White House:
“The president had the ability to call off this attack until the very last minute. He considered all scenarios — and chose action.”
Vance also hinted that the next 24 hours could be decisive as U.S. intelligence monitors Iran’s response. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth noted that the U.S. has already received “both public and private” communications from Tehran through multiple diplomatic channels.
Pressed on whether a disruption in the Strait of Hormuz would provoke U.S. retaliation, Vance warned:
“That would be suicidal for Iran. It would destroy their own economy — and force our hand.”
Despite mounting concern, Vance reiterated that the administration has “no interest in putting boots on the ground” and maintained confidence in the administration’s broader strategic goals.
