Television Legend from 1980s Series Dies at Age 79

Richard Hurst, Beloved “Dukes of Hazzard” Star, Dies at 79

Richard Hurst, the actor best known for his role as Deputy Cletus Hogg on the hit TV series The Dukes of Hazzard, passed away on Thursday at the age of 79.

News of his death was shared in a heartfelt social media post and later confirmed by his first wife, Candace Kaniecki, in a statement to TMZ.

“With heavy hearts, we say goodbye to Rick Hurst, the beloved actor who brought warmth, humor, and unforgettable charm to the role of Deputy Cletus Hogg,” the Instagram tribute read. “To fans, he was more than a character — he was family.”

The post praised Hurst’s “gentle smile, impeccable comedic timing, and kind-hearted spirit,” adding that his generosity and humility made him a favorite at fan events nationwide.

Hurst appeared in 55 episodes of The Dukes of Hazzard, becoming a staple of the show’s success. He was scheduled to appear at Cooter’s Place in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, on July 3, but canceled on Thursday due to “unforeseen circumstances.” Organizers announced that the appearance would be rescheduled.

Ben Jones, who portrayed Cooter and owns Cooter’s Place, called Hurst’s death “unexpected” and paid tribute in a moving social media post.
“I have known Rick for over 45 years, and not a minute passed without him making me smile or laugh,” Jones wrote. “He was a fine actor, a splendid comic, and a wonderfully supportive colleague. Mostly, he had a heart as big as Texas.”

Hurst began his television career in 1972 with an appearance on Sanford and Son. Over the decades, he built a robust resume with guest roles on numerous popular shows, including The Partridge Family, The Bob Newhart Show, Gunsmoke, Happy Days, Little House on the Prairie, and MASH*.

Following his time on The Dukes of Hazzard, he continued to work steadily in television and film, appearing in movies such as The Karate Kid Part III, Steel Magnolias, and In the Line of Fire. His final acting credit was in the 2016 TV short B My Guest.

Hurst is survived by his son, actor Ryan Hurst, known for his roles in The Walking Dead, Sons of Anarchy, and S.W.A.T.
