West Michigan Furniture Giant Steelcase to Be Acquired by Iowa-Based Firm

Steelcase, a West Michigan Staple, to Be Acquired by Iowa-Based Rival HNI in $2.2 Billion Deal

WYOMING, Mich. — One of West Michigan’s most iconic companies is about to enter a new chapter.

Steelcase, the renowned furniture maker headquartered in the Grand Rapids area for over a century, is set to be acquired by Iowa-based HNI Corporation in a deal valued at a staggering $2.2 billion. The merger between the two industry heavyweights was announced in a joint statement and is expected to be finalized by the end of 2025.

But for locals and long-time employees, there’s some reassuring news: Steelcase isn’t going anywhere. The company will continue to operate under its own name, and its headquarters will remain rooted in West Michigan.

Sara Armbruster, President and CEO of Steelcase, called the deal a bold move that will define the future of how people work.

“Joining with HNI is a bold step that marks the next era for Steelcase, our customers, dealers, and employees,” she said. “Together, we will be positioned to redefine what’s possible in the world of work, workers, and workplaces.”

Armbruster emphasized that the two companies share core values—like putting people and purpose at the center of their work—and sees the merger as a natural fit for both cultures.

The announcement marks a pivotal moment for Steelcase, which has been a major player in shaping modern office environments and a key employer in the region. Now, as it prepares to merge with its longtime competitor, the company says it’s looking ahead to an even more innovative and collaborative future.
