Minnesota Lynx Make Bold Midseason Move, Trade for DiJonai Carrington
The WNBA-leading Minnesota Lynx just made a powerful statement: they’re all-in on a title run.
On Saturday, the Lynx pulled off a major trade, acquiring dynamic guard DiJonai Carrington from the Dallas Wings. Carrington, last season’s Most Improved Player and a 2024 All-Defensive First Team honoree, brings grit, energy, and versatility to a Lynx squad already sitting atop the league at 24-5.
In return, Dallas received a promising package—forward Diamond Miller, guard Karlie Samuelson, and Minnesota’s 2027 second-round draft pick. Miller, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2023 draft, averaged 7.1 points per game for the Lynx and still holds long-term upside. Samuelson, acquired by Minnesota in April, had been contributing off the bench before foot surgery sidelined her at the end of June.
Carrington, who joined Dallas this past February in a blockbuster four-team deal from Connecticut, was averaging 10.4 points and a career-best 5.1 rebounds this season. Her defensive tenacity and rebounding will likely make an immediate impact on a Lynx team already stacked with talent.
To make room for the new additions, the Wings also waived veteran center Teaira McCowan, who had been averaging 5.6 points and 4.6 rebounds per game on a protected veteran contract.
While Minnesota is surging toward the playoffs with championship momentum, the Wings are clearly in rebuild mode. Despite the arrival of No. 1 overall draft pick Paige Bueckers, they’ve now dropped eight of their last 10 games and sit at a disappointing 8-21.
For the Lynx, this trade isn’t just about the now—it’s a loud message to the rest of the league: the road to the 2025 WNBA title runs through Minnesota.
